Application Documents PDF Print

Below you find a list of all documents you need to submit for your application. Note that you have to upload all documents into the online application system, hence you may need to scan some paper documents first. Please ensure that the scans are readable but not of excessive file size. A resolution of 100 to 150 dpi stored in PNG or JPG format should be OK. We recommend to hand in documents that you write yourself in PDF format.

If your application is successful, you will have to hand in the original documents for enrollment (by September 30th the latest). In addition, you need a valid passport or a birth certificate for your enrollment. Attested copies of certificates will only be accepted if they are issued by German authorities. Documents written in either English or German are acceptable. You are required to provide certified translations of documents written in other languages. Applicants from Mongolia, the People's Republic of China, and Vietnam are required to first contact the "Akademische Prüfstelle" (APS) of the German embassy in their country in order to receive a certificate without which they won't be granted a visa.

In your own interest, to prevent any loss of valuable documents, only use the electronic system. Do not send paper originals of certificates. Try to not send non-digital artwork via postal mail; use digital replicas instead.

Documents required for the application:

  • Resume

  • Certificate of an accepted bachelor's degree or equivalent

  • Certificate of English language proficiency

  • Two letters of recommendation

  • Letter of motivation

  • Portfolio (differing from the other documents, you can choose any medium that is appropriate, e.g., a CD-ROM, a DVD, a link to a Web site, a printout)

Resume

Please write a compact resume, no lengthy curriculum vitae (CV). You might create and design your own format for it (we recommend as a pdf file), or use the European Union's official Europass CV creator. The primary purpose of the resume is to allow us getting an overview on your former education as well as your academic and/or professional career. Be clear and do not omit relevant items such as projects, but keep it brief. One page will usually suffice.

Degrees Held / Professional Experience

In order to get accepted into the master's program, you need at least a bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.Sc.) in a field relevant to digital dedia (e.g., digital media, computer science, systems engineering, graphic design, fine arts, architecture), or an equivalent degree.

You can already apply now for this master's program if this qualifying degree is underway but will be issued before October 1 this year and if you provide proof of having accomplished at least 150 ECTS credits in that course.

To verify if your former degree(s) qualify you for the entry to our master's program, we rely on the official German database called Anabin. If your former degree cannot be found there, we will contact the German Central Office for Foreign Education. Note that in rare cases the title B.Sc. or B.A. alone does not warrant admission; in particular, a two-year bachelor's degree will not suffice.

Please do not forget to add information about your former program of study (such as a Web address). The Applicant Registration system has an optional section in which you can upload certificates about additional degrees and/or professional experience. Though not required, these documents can give you a bonus.

English Language Proficiency

For admission, you will need to prove good skills in the English language with one of the following certificates:

  • C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

  • TOEFL Internet- based 90 points (until further notice),

  • IELTS Band 6,5 /7, Cambridge CAE, Grade A or B, Unicert III similar.

Your certificate has to be handed in for enrollment (by September 30th the latest) . To warrant the timely arrival of your language certificate, do not ask TOEFL or other test providers to send it to us on their own. Rather, upload a scan of the certificate into the application system. Later, you will be asked to present the original or an attested copy.

The requirement for this certificate may be waived if the former degree qualifying for this master's program was taught in English or if the school education qualifying you for university entrance was in English. In such a case, please leave a remark in the appropriate comment field of our online application system and provide proof that the instruction indeed was in English if this is not self-evident, as for instance for studies at regular universities in the U.S.A. or in the UK.

Letters of Recommendation

You are required to provide at least two Letters of Recommendation. Such a letter is written by a former lecturer, professor or other persons who has worked with you and presents his/her opinion why he/she considers you a good candidate for our program.

Letter of Motivation

At the heart of your application is the Letter of Motivation, which is an essay one to two pages in length and written personally by you. It should deal with two topics: First, include personal reflections about the Master in Digital Media program in general, about its unique organization and approach. Second, you have to chose one field of interest you like to specialize in. Explain why you want to specialize in this field, how it is related to your first choice of master's project, and how you want to contribute to that project. See also

Portfolio

The portfolio should be a showcase of your previous academic and professional work, of topics you have dealt with, of what you've achieved so far. Include whatever you're proud of, as long as you can convince us that it's relevant to digital media. There are many ways to create a portfolio: It could be a website, a CD-ROM, a book, a movie, a song, or whatever you like. There are no limitations, except maybe how much you're able to ship to Bremen. Try to raise curiosity. Be creative. There's no need for excessive quantity: Quality is more important. Try not to bore but to excite your audience, which is the admission board. Impress us.
