Bachelor's Program PDF Print

Objectives

The Digital Media Bachelor Program in Bremen imparts basic skills and knowledge in the domains of design, computer science and media theory. A central aim is to enhance the ability for autonomous and independent learning. There are joint basic courses, which are compulsory. Next to these, the student may choose from two concentrations: Media Design is offered by the University of the Arts, centers on aspects of design and the fine arts. The program is finished with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). Media Informatics is offered by the other three sites: the University of Bremen and the Bremen and Bremerhaven Universities of Applied Science. This program focusses on aspects of computer science and multimedia technology. The degree awarded is a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.).

Requirements for admission

The entrance qualification for the Bachelor program is an advanced high school diploma (usually the Abitur). Only a limited number of students will be admitted. To study Media Design at the University of the Arts, an artistic test of aptitude is required. A subsequent change to Media Design will not be possible except in singular instances. Additionally, a proof of good English language skills is necessary (TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent).

Structure

The six-semester Digital Media Bachelor program has a largely flexible structure. Initial compulsory basic courses are followed by advanced and specialized courses, the Bachelor Project (final project), and the Bachelor Report at the program's conclusion. The curriculum is based on a modularized structure according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The Bachelor program requires a total of 180 Credit Points (CP); one credit is equal to approximately 30 hours of work.

The two foundational semesters are typically occupied by introductory modules into computer science, design and digital media. The goal is to attain a general understanding of approaches, technologies, notions and methods, which lay the foundations for the successful completion of subsequent advanced courses. The acquisition of programming skills, exercises in desgin, and the conceptual framework needed for reflections on the subject of media are all part of the package.

The advanced and specialized semesters are filled with compulsory option courses, a semester abroad, the Bachelor's Project, and the Bachelor Report. An individual choice of focus is possible.

The semester abroad is also compulsory. Typically, it should be taken as the fifth semester. Our worldwide exchange program offers free study places at dozens of partner universities, but it is not mandatory to select from these. If desired, the abroad semester can be taken at any other approved university in a foreign country.

The Bachelor's Project forms one of the program's major centers of attention. Within the time of two semesters and starting from a given assignment, a complete development cycle---conception, development and evaluation---of a prototypical, complex mediasystem will be devised. The supervising instructor will grant an ample amount of leeway; the results of a project will depend significantly on its participants.

The Bachelor Thesis, usually comprising half the workload of a semester, concludes the study program. Here, students can demonstrate their ability to work independently and autonomously in the field of digital media. The application of known scientific results will be a key factor. Research topics may be derived from previous work in the Bachelor Project, from instructors' offers, or may be chosen freely.

A twelve-week internship is only compulsory for students enrolled before winter term 2006/07. It will usually take place during a semester break in an authorized educating business. The aim is to provide students with a glimpse into the realities of professional media work.
