Overview

With 36 out of 120 credits, the master's project is one of the core activities within the Digital Media master's program. The master's project is unlike projects in many other universities: During two semesters, the project's participants - usually between 10 and 20 people - will go through the whole development cycle of a complex system or artefact that tries to solve a given, real-world problem: fundamental research, problem analysis, system design, implementation, installation and evaluation. The application's problem domain is chosen in order to touch many different aspects of current digital media.

Self-organized

It is important to note that master's projects are highly self-organized: Professors and assistants will guide and help you, but they will usually not instruct you what to do specifically. As a result, student's participants of a project will not only learn about the given subject areas, but they will also become acquainted with social dynamics, project managements and other topics that typically arise in real-life projects - a valuable experience for future work and life.

Organization

Usually, the project takes place in the second and third semester of the master's program. Each university offers at least one project each year. Proposals for upcoming projects are published prior to the application period of the respective students. Applicants are requested to select one of these and write a statement about their expectations of and possible contributions to their chosen project. Because the master's project is a core part of the master's program, this essay is relevant for assignment of applications to universities. Students are expected to participate in their project of choice.
